about alexa west
Hi! I’m Alexa West, a broke-ass Seattle girl turned female entrepreneur, best-selling author and digital nomad.
In 2011, I boarded a plane with just $200 in my pocket and have traveled to over 20 countries, lived on 4 continents, and now call the tropical island of Bali, home.
The Solo Girl’s Travel Guide is now the #1 selling travel guidebook for women.
MY MOM SAID…
it was a bad idea to board an international flight with just $200 in my pocket and absolutely zero experience traveling solo. But as I lay here in Bali, overlooking my $35 per night private pool villa surrounded by palm trees… I can officially say that Mom, you were so wrong.
In 2011, I had just graduated college and knew I didn’t want a 9-5 job. I had so much more to give than just sitting at a desk for the next 40 years. I wanted to help people. I wanted to eat strange food and speak to people in other languages. I wanted to get away from my hometown.
But growing up, I was told that travel was unattainable. Because I didn’t come from a rich family and I still had student loans to pay, I couldn’t possibly have enough money to make this dream life work for me.
Expensive travel was for rich kids, right?
Not letting an empty bank account
define my dreams, I got creative…
I quickly realized that there were organizations, opportunities, and travel programs that would PAY ME or pay for me to travel the world. And I took advantage of those opportunities.
- I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bulgaria.
- I was an English Teacher in South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan.
- I was a bartender on an island in Cambodia.
- I was a house sitter in Costa Rica.
You get the picture.
I pinched pennies. I ate tuna from a can. And I traded my skills for adventure. This is where I became an expert in budget backpacking. And then, slowly…I began creating my writing portfolio. I studied copywriting. I started sharing my experiences, my travel hacking tips, and my knowledge of Asia with women around the world.
And then I published my first best seller.
Fast-forward 1.5 years, and I’m no longer a budget backpacker.
HERE I AM, TODAY;
a best-selling travel author and female digital nomad traveling the world with my laptop, camera, and makeup bag.
Planes, trains, and buses – I never sacrifice beauty or fashion. My travels are a mix of budget and luxury. I fly Business Class without paying for it. I’m an expert packer & travel hacker.
What I discovered was that you don’t have to be limited to one trip a year. It doesn’t have to be “once in a lifetime”, instead it can be a real part of your life. Oh, and you can travel on a budget, without looking (or feeling) like you’re on a budget.
I know what it’s like to travel on every level. I was completely blind getting on that plane 8 years ago. Poor and clueless, with little experience traveling outside of America. Yet I’ve worked my way up from hostels to staying in five-star resorts.
Now I’ve been in Asia for so long that I have local tips and insights, which you simply don’t get from a 3-week trip. When I say off the beaten path, I mean it, because I’m a local.
But this isn’t all about me, and how great my hair looks. This is about you and how great your hair looks. I feel good when you’ve learned something – when you’ve saved $5 on a bus trip or found a really cool waterfall no one else knows about. That’s my mission.
SO, I’M GOING TO MAKE YOU SOME

Since being featured in The Solo Girl’s Travel Guidebook for Thailand, we have received over 200 guests at $90 per head directly from Alexa’s book. That amounts to over $18,000 USD in sales. Not only do we get solo female travelers - but we also get solo male travelers, couples and families, too. The reach of this guide has been nothing short of incredible. We are also extremely proud to be associated with a guide that encourages females to travel independently.
Traveling Solo as a female can be scary at times and Alexa certainly understands that. On my trip, I fell ill and didn’t know what to do. She answered my message right away and saved me probably hundreds of dollars in medical bills, by just telling me to go to the pharmacy. Without this book, I would’ve been lost, scared and probably ended my trip sooner. I recommend all of her books to everyone!
I went to Bali alone, last minute, with only this book as my guide. Recently divorced and 62, I just read and followed her suggestions blindly and they lead me through paradise. I caught her passion and honesty, made friends, and found her advice on point and priceless. I read the book. Put it on my kindle, and tore out the itinerary pages and brought them with me. I can’t wait to return. This is the most useful, concise guidebook I have ever used and it gave me the courage to be bold and venture out.
I traveled solo hopping around Thailand for a month and I felt completely prepared and safe the entire time 100% thanks to this guide. I honestly would have felt lost without it. Not only did it help me feel safe and plan an unforgettable trip, it led me to beautiful places I will never forget and to people from all over the world who became lifelong friends. Google couldn’t do that for me.
I had originally purchased the Lonely Planet travel guide which only overwhelmed me and I was unable to decide what parts of Thailand to go to. This guide narrowed things down for me and allowed me to plan a great trip instead of trying to squeeze too many destinations in. I love the entertaining writing style and quick, to the point suggestions. Will be purchasing your other guides for my future travels!
I have bought many travel books in my time. But The Solo Girl’s Travel Guide is hands-down the most practical, useful travel book I have ever read. I leave for Bali in a few weeks and I feel this book has totally prepared me for my trip. She also breaks it down into different budgets. Which makes it easy to find accommodations. I'm telling you you cannot go wrong with these books. Thank you Miss Alexa. It's obvious you put your whole heart into your writing.
Nomad Coaching Call
Alexa made it feel like we have already been friends for so long. When I told her what I was going through (a recent layoff) she said yes, that f*cking sucks but what is holding you back from doing what you want? And that’s exactly what I needed to hear but hadn’t heard from anyone yet! If you need someone to talk to...chat with Alexa first.
Nomad Coaching Call
I’m so thankful for my call with Alexa. She really helped me go from feeling scatter-brained to giving me direction on where I want to go with my side hustle. I highly recommend her calls if you are feeling like you lack focus or direction.
Nomad Coaching Call
Chatting with Alexa was really insightful. In times like this, collaborations, partnerships and mentoring are more important than ever. And to get the opportunity to talk to Alexa...is too good an opportunity to turn down. Alexa is kind, intelligent and thought and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a call with her.
Trip to Thailand
The trip planning process was incredibly smooth and the final itinerary exceeded my expectations! There is no way I could have planned such an awesome trip that checked all of my “must-do” boxes and then some. Even came in under budget!
